How to add a border to a round image online

  1. Choose a photo, or drop or paste a round picture you already have.

  2. Open the Ring tab, drag Thickness to set the border, and choose Inside or Outside.

  3. Choose the ring color: white, one suggested from the photo, one of your own, or one taken with the eyedropper.

  4. In the File tab, choose the format and the size, then press Done and Download.

Border inside or outside the circle

Choose Inside when the file has to keep its size, for example when a site asks for an exact number of pixels. The border is then drawn over the outer edge of the photo, so keep faces and words away from that edge.

Choose Outside when none of the photo may be covered, as with a logo whose letters run close to the edge. The border is added around the circle, and the file's width and height each grow by twice the border's width.

With Whole photo on, an outside border is the safe choice, because it covers none of the picture.

Pick a border color for a profile picture

You can make the border white, use a color suggested from your photo, pick any color yourself, or sample one from the photo with the eyedropper.

A color from the photo makes the border blend with the picture, and a different color makes it stand out.

How thick a round border can be

A border can be up to a fifth of the circle's diameter thick, and you set it with the Thickness slider in the Ring tab.

At the thickest setting, an outside border adds two fifths of the diameter to the file's width and height, because it grows on both sides.

The whole file, border included, stays within 4096 px, or less if your device sets a lower limit. So on a very large photo, a thick outside border leaves less room for the picture itself.

FAQ

How do I make a pfp ring?

Open your profile picture, then in the Ring tab drag Thickness until the ring looks right, choose Outside so it covers none of your photo, and pick its color. Press Done and download a PNG, so the corners around the ring stay transparent.

Can I add a border to a circle image without Photoshop or Canva?

Yes, and you do not draw it: CircleCrop's Ring tab sets the border's thickness with a slider, its place and its color, in your browser, with nothing to install and no account to make. It is free and leaves no watermark.

Can I add a border to a picture that is already round?

Yes, if your round picture fills a square file, because CircleCrop starts from the largest centered circle, which then matches the picture's edge. If it does not fit exactly, drag and zoom until the circle sits just inside the edge, then choose Outside to add the ring without covering any of the picture.

Can a circle image with a border keep transparent corners?

Yes, in PNG and WebP. Whether the border sits inside or outside, it forms the outer edge of the circle, and everything beyond it stays transparent. Only a JPEG fills those corners, with the background color, or white when none is set.

To crop a photo into a circle without a border, use the circle crop image tool.

To fit a whole picture inside the circle with nothing cut off, see profile picture without cropping.
